A young Hawaiian Democrat, ex-military, launches the US presidential election

A former military, criticized for a meeting with the Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad in the midst of a civil war, the Hawaiian Democrat Congressman Tulsi Gabbard announced Friday (only 37 years old) that she was starting the presidential election. 2020.

A very young entry for local politics in Hawaii, where she prefers to surf the Internet, Tulsi Gabbard was the first American of Samoan descent and the first Hindu born fellow brother to come into the House of Representatives, where she has been since 2013.

If she was elected to the White House, she would become the youngest president in the United States.

"I decided to start and I will make a formal announcement next week," she said on Friday evening with a big smile on CNN.

"There were many reasons for me to make that decision", she continued before she listed the health system, the reform of the court and the fight against climate change. With a main question, that of war and peace.

In January 2017 Tulsi Gabbard went to Damascus and Aleppo, Syria, because, she explained, an observation mission to find a way out of the bloody conflict.

She met leader Bashar Al-Assad during a much criticized visit to the United States. "I did not intend to meet Assad first, but when it was introduced to me, I felt it was important to do it", then justified it.

At the age of 21, elected to the Hawaii Assembly in 2002, she took part in the Hawaii National Guard and left her parliamentary duties to volunteer for a one-year commitment to Iraq in 2005..

In 2009 she again offered to return to the Middle East. Tulsi Gabbard is still a reservist for the National Guard.

The candidates are very much on the democratic side of trying to drive Donald Trump out of the White House in 2020. But only a few have formalized their ambitions.

Progressive Elizabeth Warren was the first important person to take a big step on 31 December and announced that she was launching a support committee to raise funds and measure her chances.
