The two artists who have the most Grammy nominations this year, refused to perform on the show.

That is according to Ken Ehrlich, the old producer of the show.

Ehrlich told the New York Times that he offered rappers Drake, Lamar and Childish Gambino possible output slots on Sunday night's show and was rejected.

"The fact is that we still have a problem in the hip-hop world", Ehrlich told the newspaper. "If they do not take the big prize home, the attention for the academy and what the Grammy's represent will remain less important for the hip-hop community, which is a shame."

Do the Grammy's also have a race problem?

CNN contacted the three rappers for comment.

Lamar leads this year with eight nominations, followed by Drake who has seven. Childish Gambino has five nominations.

The Recording Academy has made efforts to diversify its membership amid complaints that Grammy's are not a level playing field for minorities and female artists.

In 2017, Recording Academy president Neil Portnow said in an interview with Pitchfork that he did not think there was a race problem.

"In my humble opinion, we do not listen, as musicians, to music based on gender, race or ethnicity," Portnow said. "If you are going to vote for a piece of music – at least the way I approach it – you will almost be blindfolded and listen."

CNN contacted the Recording Academy for additional comments.

The 61st Grammy Awards will be broadcast at 20:00. ET Sunday at CBS.
