The 25th SAG prize has given rise to some surprises and affection for the actor community and the guild, as "Black Panther" won the award for the cast of ensemble cast SAG. "The wonderful lady Maisel" dominated the categories of the television comedy and "This Is Us" won the award for the television drama Sunday night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
An exultant Chadwick Boseman accepted the award for "Black Panther", which surpassed "A Star Is Born", "BlacKkKlansman", "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Crazy Rich Asians." Boseman admitted that he had not prepared a speech, then he said, "Being young, gifted and black …. We all know what it means to be told that there's no place to make you appear – yet you're young, gifted and black. We know what it means to be said, to say that there is no screen for you to be presented on, a stage for your role. "
Boseman explained in the backstage that he used the title of the 1969 song Nina Simone to highlight the challenges that black actors face in a world where they are often relegated to being the assistant and the support player. "We knew we had something special, that we could create a world that would exemplify a world we wanted to see," said Boseman.
The winner of the SAG ensemble trophy has equaled the best Oscar winner only 11 times in 23 years. "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" and "Hidden Figures" won the last two awards of the SAG cast, while "The Shape of Water" and "Moonlight" took the Oscars
Glenn Close won the SAG Award for Best Actress for his nuanced interpretation as a betrayed girlfriend in "The Wife" and Rami Malek won for the actor for his searing portrait of Freddie Mercury in "Bohemian Rhapsody".
Close, who was nominated for seven Oscars without winning, underlined the importance of acting in his acceptance, saying: "One of the most powerful things we have as human beings are two eyes that look into two other eyes", He said.
The winners of the SAG actress went on to win the Oscar for six years in a row, including Frances McDormand last year for "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri".
An emotional Malek thanked the late Mercury in his acceptance, saying, "I take a little power from him that involves intensifying and living your life better, being exactly what you want to be and accomplishing everything what you want ".
The victory of the SAG strengthens Malek's status as a first-level driver. The winners of the SAG actors have combined the Oscar 13 times over the past 14 years, including Gary Oldman ("The Darkest Now") last year.
Mahershala Ali won the SAG Award for Best Supporting Actor for "Green Book" and Emily Blunt won the Support Actress for "A Quiet Place".
Ali won the same award two years ago for "Moonlight", won the Oscar for the role and is again an Oscar nominee for his portrayal of pianist Don Shirley in "Green Paper".
Ali said in the backstage that the opportunity to play Don Shirley in "Green Book" was by far the best opportunity presented in his career. "I felt I could do something with that character," he added.
Blunt was the mother of a family under attack by aliens in "A Quiet Place". She was also nominated star actress at the SAG Awards for "Mary Poppins Returns". He has not yet received an Oscar nomination.
Blunt thanked his spouse John Krasinski, who directed and performed, for choosing her. "He would have been in trouble if I had not," he added.
Megan Mullally hosted the show – the second ever for the show in its 25-year history – and got several laughs defining the awards "the greatest honor an actor can receive – this weekend" and teasing Emma Stone : "To the candidate SAG Emma Stone, who has just turned 30 – our condolences, you have made a good race."
He also showed a residual that his late father Carter Mullally, Jr., had received for the "Twilight Zone" pilot, as part of his presentation of SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris.
"The wonderful lady Maisel" won all the trophies of the comic series SAG Awards for Rachel Brosnahan and Tony Shalhoub in the categories of actors along with the ensemble cast. Shalhoub said he felt confident in the Amazon series from the start, even if he no longer tries to predict the successes.
"I gave up trying to predict what will work and what will not work," Shalhoub said in the backstage. "I had a great feeling because of the high level of writing and this incredible cast … I can say for once in all these years that I was right."
"This Is Us" was repeated as the winner of the drama series at the SAG Awards. Jason Bateman won the actor in a dramatic series award for "Ozark", his first win after eight nominations. He cracked the audience by opening his acceptance by saying "This is reassuring".
Sandra Oh won the actress in a drama series award for "Killing Eve" and offered effusive thanks to her fellow actors, identifying Jamie Foxx and Alfre Woodward, and saying, "I felt your support so tremendously in the last years".
Oh was asked in the backstage of the movement towards inclusion and better representation of women and minorities.
"May it continue to grow," he replied. "And we're still there, obviously not, but it's always good to have something to aspire to and move on to see yourself represented is a deeply human need and I'm happy to support it."
Patricia Arquette won for best actress in a TV movie or miniseries for "Escape at Dannemora". It was his second SAG Award after winning a secondary actor award four years ago for "Boyhood". He concluded his acceptance by thanking Special Counsel Robert Mueller "and everyone works to make sure that he has sovereignty for the United States of America".
Darren Criss won the trophy for Best Actor in a TV movie or miniseries, "Assassination of Gianni Versace" for his portrayal of serial killer Andrew Cunanan.
Alan Alda received a standing ovation when he received Tom Hanks' SAG Life Achievement Award and revealed during his acceptance that he had to deal with Parkinson's disease for several years.
"I see more than ever now how proud I am to be part of our brotherhood and sisterhood of actors," he said. "It may never have been more urgent to see the world through the eyes of another person. When a culture is so strongly divided, actors can help a little while simply doing what we do."
Geoffrey Owens, a former "Cosby Show" goer who was discovered while working at a grocery store last fall, appeared in a "I'm an actor" segment well received at the start of the series and he said that his professional life has improved.
"Somewhere in the middle of the road of my life, I found myself in the dark of unemployment and debt, but instead of changing career as a sane person, I took a job at a local Joe merchant to see if I could stay in there with my career and it actually worked pretty well, "said Owens. "I'm Geoffrey Owens and I'm an actor."
Before the show's telecast, "Black Panther" and "GLOW" won prizes for the stunt ensembles.
