10 years of IWWIT: for safe gay sex and a safe life

It is ten years ago that German AIDS aid launched its prevention campaign. I KNOW WHAT I TU, which is specifically aimed at gay men. The go-ahead was on October 13, 2008. In the past 10 years a lot has happened in the gay scene, but also in the world of prevention.

Tim Schomann, campaign manager at ICH WEISS WAS I TU, remembers that at the start of the campaign nobody could imagine that IWWIT would exist for so long. But the topics that have been addressed have consistently been respected – such as a campaign to gain acceptance in the scene, in which discrimination within the gay world is tackled. Or the poster campaign "It's enough for me!", Which drew attention to the problem of homophobia through clear images. And at the moment the campaign for "Safer Sex 3.0", with which all three effective methods for protection against HIV were communicated for the first time in Germany. "Everyone should choose the best safer sex method between condom, PrEP and protection through therapy," says Schomann.

Schomann explains the purpose of his work: "We want homosexual men Safer sex can make confident decisions based on knowledge.Of course, in the initial period of the campaign there must have been a learning process in the community.Today our reach among homosexual men is very high. "

The world, especially the gay world, is constantly changing

But there is still plenty to do: "The world, especially the gay world, is constantly changing," explains Schomann. Compared with 2008, there are many new requirements for prevention today. That e.g. Safer sex, even without a condom is possible, now known as "protection through therapy" would have known 10 years ago, only initiates. And just a few years ago the PrEP was the third safe sex method that was yet to come.

Schomann wants IWWIT to remain credible and up-to-date as a campaign. In order to do this, one must pick up themes and # 39; s and developments from the community and continue to develop. As keywords he quotes topics such as substance use, partnership or coming out. To this end, a new campaign will be launched next spring. Besides an independent website, cooperation with regional partners and schools must also be part of this campaign.

On Friday evening, IWWIT celebrates its 10th anniversary at the SchwuZ in Berlin – for the online presence of IWWIT!
