Although it is likely to cause a rapid rise in blood pressure when you first start exercising, it will reduce your hypertension risk over a number of months, she said.

Weight lifting can also have a positive effect on your overall health, Kantor said.

"High blood pressure is something that everyone should avoid because it significantly increases the risk of serious diseases such as heart disease, blood clots, strokes and kidney problems," Kantor told Express.co.uk.

"It goes without saying that regular exercise can help lower your blood pressure, in addition to a host of other physical benefits.

"It not only gives you more energy, it also significantly reduces stress.

"A type of exercise that I strongly recommend to lower blood pressure is strength training.

"Although there is often a first strong increase when you take up the discipline for the first time, weightlifting lowers your blood pressure in the long term and is also an excellent way to stimulate your metabolism and reduce body fat."

You could also reduce your risk of high blood pressure by doing cardiovascular exercises, Kantor said.

Strength training, jogging, swimming and cycling can also help to lower your blood pressure and improve the strength of your arteries.

Everyone must strive to perform at least 150 minutes of activity with an average intensity each day.

High blood pressure is often known as "the silent killer" because you may not know that you are at risk for the condition.

Signs only show if you have extremely high blood pressure.

Common symptoms of high blood pressure include severe chest pain, blurred vision and developing a pounding headache.

All adults over the age of 40 must check their blood pressure at least once every five years.
