2018 Annecy Festival: a selection of very rich French short films

Who will succeed burden (Min Börda) Swedish Niki Lindroth Von Bahr, Short film 2017 of the International Animation Film Festival (to see and see here)?

It is of course too early to predict, even if big names in animation are included in the selection of 46 professional short films in competition, starting with the Estonian Riho Unt, veteran of the animation in volume, jury prize in 2015 for The teacherwith whom comes back Maria and the 7 dwarfs.

We will come back in future posts about the young audience selection, which were made last year with the aim of encouraging the production and creativity of these films that are still a minority among the animated shorts.

The French selection is particularly rich, because 12 works produced or co-produced by France compete, more than a quarter of the selected films. No wonder, the largest contingent (with the United States and the United Kingdom) of more than 3,000 films sent to the selection committee under the direction of Marcel Jean, artistic delegate of the festival, is tricolor.

Here are some names that come out of this selection:

Justine Vuylsteker, young and brilliant director, had bluffed her world Paris, adaptation of a poem by Robert Desnos, in which a blind man, a floating figure animated with sand, walked with full vigilance through the capital. For his second film, hugs, she continues her experiments with an exceptional technique, the penscherm (learn more), nicknamed the "Stradivarius animation".

Gilles Cuvelier creates films with a highly processed atmosphere, with eloquent silences and sound effects, not hesitant to immobilize his camera to give the viewer the time to immerse themselves in the frame. after noise (2005) and Love Patate (2010), he returns with (Fool Time) Job, a fantastic story, cold and enigmatic.

Denis Walgenwitz and Winshlusswho both worked Persepolis, the first as assistant director, the second as co-director. They met again to work on Death, father and son, adaptation of one of the short stories of Winshluss, from the collection entitled Welcome to the Death Club (Ed Cornelius). A title that is sarcastic and macabre as the humor of the author, whose characteristics are parodies of disney characters and American comics from the 1930s to the 1950s (read more).

Sébastien Laudenbach, director of the extraordinary Young girl without hands (2016), who has just delivered a formidable quadriptych for Dominique A (see here and interview there), has been selected for a previous film, vibrato. This is a carte blanche (and not a command, subtle nuance) that is awarded to the filmmaker by the Paris Opera for publication on his audiovisual creation site, third scene (read here). We can also see below this movie that takes the form of an architecture animation essay.

imgraymond-768x432Sarah Van Den Boom, director of the disturbing In deep waters (2015), back with an animated film in volume, Raymonde or the vertical escape, about a 60-year-old owl woman who tries to break the daily routine and break her loneliness.

Inès Sedan, director of a beautiful film about violence against women, El Canto (2013), comes back with a short film, Love He Said, about the underground poet Charles Bukowski, his ethical provocations, but also his loneliness and his thirst for love.

Boris Labbé continues his experimental work on animation. After the super rhizome (2015), then mountain origin (2017), film about the limits of abstraction and animation, he comes back with an apocalyptic work, The autumnthat of the world, " from which the underworld will be born and, on the contrary, the circles of paradise"…
