Manchester United has added Gareth Southgate to the list of potential managers who will take over in the summer, as they are increasingly worried that Mauricio Pochettino will stay in Tottenham.

After the dismissal of Jose Mourinho for Christmas, United in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took Pochettino as the favorite to succeed in Old Trafford this summer until the end of the season.

United has now, however, turned his attention elsewhere, because they fear that the Argentinian will probably continue and build on his current project in North London.

Southgate signed a new contract to remain England’s manager until the end of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar following the success of the Three Lions in Russia.

An opportunity to jump from one ship can be difficult after his recent renewal of the contract with the national team. Although Southgate has been added as a viable option to take over at United, the Red Devils are wary of his experience at club level.

Prior to his success with England, Southgate had only one spell at club level, where he led Middlesbrough for three years between 2006 and 2009.

Zinedine Zidane, who led Real Madrid to three consecutive Champions League victories during his tenure, is also on the shortlist to take over permanently from Mourinho.

The Mirror also reports that Diego Simeone was designated as a suitable successor in the long term this summer.

The manager of Atletico Madrid is currently in contract negotiations with the Spanish side as his current agreement expires in the summer of 2020.
