In the Bundesliga at the top, in the DFB Cup is no longer there: Borussia Dortmund has gambled the chance of the national double early. With the dramatic 4: 2 in the penalty shootout against Werder Bremen, the league première adopted as in the previous year already in the second round of the competition. Gehandicapt by a cold wave, the BVB coach Lucien Favre on Tuesday could not build on the good form of the past few weeks. The hero on penalties was Bremen goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka, who was able to fend off two Dortmund penalties.
On Tuesday evening in front of 81,365 spectators at the sold-out Signal Iduna Park had in the 120 minutes after which it was 3: 3 (1: 1, 1: 1), Marco Reus (45 + 3), Christian Pulisic (105th minute ) and Achraf Hakimi (113) for BVB. For the brave Bremer Milot Rashica (5th), Claudio Pizarro (108th) and Martin Harnik (119th) were successful. To the chagrin of Favre Roman Bürki, Marvin Hitz, Jadon Sancho and Marcel Schmelzer fell out because of influenza infections. In addition, the Swiss coach had to give up on Lukasz Piszczek (Fußblessur). Especially the absence of the two keeper Bürki and heat caused problems. U23 keeper Eric Oelschlägel moved in the second round for the first time in a professional duty game in goal – of all against his former club.
And debutant Oelschlägel had to catch up early. A free-kick by Max Kruse promoted attacker Rashica with the tip of the foot into the goal. It was not the first time that BVB had problems in the cup this season. Against the second division Greuther Fürth (2: 1) and Union Berlin (3: 2) was previously the extension necessary to make it to the next round. Bremen had easily prevailed in the first two rounds against Wormatia Worms (6: 1) and Weiche Flensburg (5: 1).
BVB reacted to the early deficit with tempo football and was close to equalizing in the 14th minute in a ground trick by Mario Götze after a pass from Christian Pulisic. But the well-staggered Werder defense was initially rarely wavering. Despite a clear advantage in possession of almost 70 percent of the Borussia could earn no further opportunity. Significantly, a free kick helped to equalize. Bremen goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka was powerless against the shot from Reus seconds before the half-time whistle.
After the restart, BVB had to accept another staff setback with the loss of Reus. The best scorer of the previous Dortmund season had to be replaced due to muscular problems in the thigh. Without the offensive star, the second half was a test of patience for the hosts. It lacked ideas, speed and Torgefahr – the game of Borussia lost significantly in penetration. Against the now very defensive Bundesliga tithing Werder scarcely opened spaces, offensively made Bremen little.
Oelschlägel saved Dortmund in the 89th minute with a spectacular free-kick by Kruse into extra time. Dortmund's Thomas Delaney narrowly missed with a header in added time. Shortly before the end of the first half of the season, Pulisic seemed to have released the four-time Cup winner after a strong individual performance. However substitute veteran Pizarro made it through in a highly dramatic final phase before Hakimi scored again for BVB and equalized Harnik one minute before the end.
