In the dispute over the role Poland During the Nazi period, the government in Warsaw demanded an apology from Israel. Otherwise, there would be a "frosty turn" in the bilateral relationship, the government said.
Background of the dispute are statements by the Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, after which "Poland with the mother's milk anti-Semitism" absorb. In addition, Katz said that there were "many Poles who cooperated with the Nazis".
In Poland, the allegations caused indignation. The government had therefore already canceled its participation in a summit of the four East European Visegrad states and Israel in Jerusalem.
Marek Suski, chief of staff of the Polish Prime Minister, and Deputy Foreign Minister Szymon Szynkowski called on Israel's government to apologize for Katz's comments. Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki had previously condemned Katz's statements as racist and had therefore canceled the participation of his Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz at the planned Visegrád summit in Jerusalem.
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received representatives from Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic at the summit meeting despite the rejection of Poland and praised the good relations with the EU countries. The dispute between Israel and Poland had already started last week, according to Netanyahu Haaretz had said that "the Poles had cooperated with the Germans" in the murder of the Jews.
For barely a year now, Poland has also been punished with a new law that imposes a fine on the Polish nation to account for the crimes committed by Nazi Germany.
