Park Central's plans for a large-scale Creighton University project that will help Arizona doctors train and practice inside state lines are currently underway, with new renderings and conceptual designs showing a glance to the future.
The construction of the two-phase, two-phase building of the Creighton University Health Sciences Area is scheduled for early spring. The companies of the Plaza will oversee the construction and the local construction team has been formed. A preliminary question was presented to the city of Phoenix for the new building.
The addition to one of the city's most representative properties will become a training camp for around 800 medical students. It will host a four-year medical school, a nursing school, a physiotherapy school, a pharmacy school, a medical assistant and an emergency medical services program.
Meanwhile, while the campus is under construction, Creighton College of Nursing has moved its local presence to Park Central, where more than 100 students have started their courses in the new facility on Monday.
The new campus for state-of-the-art health sciences, which will be built on an open parking lot at Park Central in downtown Phoenix, will greatly expand learning opportunities for medical students across the state and the region.
"Creighton University is changing the landscape for medical students seeking to train and practice here in Arizona, with the goal of improving not only the learning opportunities for students, but also the quality of patients receiving medical care in the state, "said Plaza President, CEO and founder Sharon Harper. "There's a clear, undeniable need to keep more Arizona doctors practicing near home, and this is a key step to encouraging change."
"We are preparing for an exciting new era in Phoenix, which combines our tradition for educational excellence in health sciences with our unique Catholic Jesuit mission," said Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD, president of Creighton University. "Creighton University has strong ties to the medical community of Arizona, and we look forward to expanding our impact by educating many exceptionally skilled health professionals to serve the community."
Plaza companies and Holualoa companies in Tucson are collaborating on the redevelopment of the Park Central Mall, which was once the city's first large-scale official mall. Companies are moving the expansive space from a shopping center to a nearly 500,000-square-foot lively community hub ideal for playing, working, reuniting and celebrating the arts.
Plaza Companies is working closely with Creighton to form a team that includes the vision and mission of the university and its commitment to Arizona. Okland Construction was selected as general contractor for the first phase of the Creighton University building. The Butler Design Group will act as an architect and the designer and designer of conceptual architecture and tenant is RDG Planning & Design.
The campus of Creighton Health Sciences promises to serve as a focal point for education and learning within the center of Phoenix. The facility will provide students, faculty, staff and the health community with easy access to Park Central services, two nearby light rail stations and close proximity to some of Phoenix's most established neighborhoods. The first two floors of the building will include active learning classes and a 300-seat common room that will be available for public use, as well as a 30-seat non-confessional chapel. The upper floors will be equipped with state-of-the-art medical simulation and experiential learning environments.
The construction of the new medical facility will begin this spring and should be completed in the spring of 2021.
