USA: At least five killed in shootout in Illinois - Panorama

A man opened fire on a factory site in the US state of Illinois on early Friday afternoon (local time). According to police, at least five people died in the severe incident in Aurora, about 65 kilometers west of Chicago. The shooter was later killed in a shootout with civil servants.

NBC reports, citing the authorities, that the perpetrator was identified as 45-year-old Gary Martin. He is said to have been employed by the valve manufacturer Henry Pratt Co. and received his release papers only two weeks ago.

An employee of Henry Pratt Co. told ABC7 that he recognized the shooter – he also works in the company. "I saw the guy running down a corridor with a laser gun attached," he told the TV station.

Illinois' governor Jay Robert Pritzker was dismayed. "There are no words for the kind of evil that steals our neighbors' hopes, dreams and future," he said Chicago Tribune cited.

The incident evokes memories of the assassination in another place called Aurora in the state of Colorado. There, a shooter had opened the fire in 2012 at a movie premiere in the hall, killed twelve people and injured about 70 others.
