Why the remake of Sabrina has nothing to do with the original anymore

At some point between the Simpsons and what ProSieben called NewLime was my Happy Time: As a pubescent teen I have no episode of the US sitcom Sabrina – Total bewitched! missed with Melissa Joan-Hart and co. All the greater was the joy as Netflix announced it was working on a remake of the hit series. But with the first trailer for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina came with me also the first doubts: The new Netflix Sabrina has to do with the young witch, which I still remember, not too much. Nevertheless, the new series deserves a chance. Also on ze.tt

"Chilling Adventures of Sabrina": The remake of "Sabrina – Total bewitched!"

The ten episodes of the first season, which were released on October 26, 2018 on Netflix, are grim, mysterious, bloodthirsty – and definitely not for the faint hearted. The series is based on the comic book series of the same name, which was published by Archie Comics since 2014 and plays in Greendale, a neighboring town of Riverdale. Yes, exactly: the Riverdale. There, Sabrina Spellman lives with her two aunts Hilda and Zelda, her cousin Ambrose and the cat Salem in a huge, eerie estate, from where the Spellmans lead a funeral home. Unlike her aunts, Sabrina is only a half-witch: her father was a sorceress, her mother a mortal. But now Sabrina's sixteenth birthday is about to leave her past life, her school and her friend Harvey behind and sign a signature in the book of the Beast of Satan and attend an academy for witches and sorcerers. The first season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina tells how Sabrina struggles through life between normality and magic, between love and despair, between good and evil. Because of prude The plot is much denser than even in Sabrina – Totally bewitched! and the ten episodes are working towards a brilliant, unexpected season finale, which – so much is revealed – still leaves enough questions unanswered. Occasionally, some scenes have real horror character, I was often inclined to crawl under the covers and not even look. Because it is murdered, stabbed and cursed: Slit throats, cannibalism and a lot of blood are an integral part of the new series. Intrigue, drama, murder and manslaughter are also on the agenda. But not only horror, even sex is suddenly on the program: Was the 90s Sabrina still relatively prudish, is now geknutscht, fumbled and rumgemacht, what the stuff holds. Mortals are seduced, provocative and terse outfits are staged and the leather whip is swung. In addition, there is finally a gay couple, which also comes straight to the point. In general, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina seems much more cosmopolitan: A friend of Sabrina is teased by her classmates, because they behave not girlish enough. She is called a lesbian, even physically assaulted. And what is Sabrina doing? Together with her friends, she founds a club called the Female Intersectional Cultural and Creative Working Community, or WIKKA, for women's rights and equal treatment. Their motto: "The more girls join in, the louder we will be!" Apparently, the creators of series now understand how important these topics are. A queasy feeling And even Sabrina Spellman herself is not so easy to say something: She has her own mind, her own opinion, does not like anything and just does not take it that way. It takes the initiative, goes its own way and even finds counter-words for the head of the magic community, Satan. At the same time Sabrina is still a teenager who is in love with her friend Harvey immortal. The two experience the ups and downs of a first, young love. The authors have succeeded in drawing a more contemporary Sabrina: a Sabrina who is strong, has her own ideals, fights for her fellow human beings – and at the same time makes mistakes and thus remains human. Fatshaming? Why the Netflix series "Insatiable" is being discussed hard before the start

Did you know Sabrina – Total bewitched! To be sure, at the end of each of the approximately 22-minute episodes, everything will be fine, at Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, you can never be sure what's next, who's going to get killed next, or what fate the Spellmans are experiencing. Although this ensures a lasting ten-episode, queasy feeling, but at the same time constant for tension and unexpected twists. If you think Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is just a nice remake of the entertaining 90's classic, you'll probably be disappointed: Apart from the character names, these two series are completely different and absolutely incomparable. Personally, as a big fan of Sabrina – Totally bewitched !, the first ten episodes have been a lot of fun, entertaining me pretty well, even making me laugh from time to time, and I'm looking forward to the second season, which is expected to be next year Netflix is published. Apart from a downside, which must not go unmentioned: Kater Salem speaks unfortunately not a word and is much scary than the chubby cat of the 90s. Ah yes, and I've been waiting in vain for a guest appearance by Britney Spears so far.
