Jets quarterback Sam Darnold is not expected to play in Sunday's game against the Bills with what Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News describes as a "significant" foot sprain.
The news, which was confirmed on Wednesday by Rich Cimini from ESPN, comes as a surprise. Darnold told reporters during a conference call on Monday that he had only been "bothered by" bumps and bruises "during the loss of Sunday to the dolphins, but otherwise" everything is fine. "New York coach Todd Bowles meanwhile said he was the same day did not know that his novice quarterback was injured.
According to both Mehta and Cimini, Darnold saw a running shoe on his right foot at the Jets & # 39; team facility on Wednesday and did not practice. Mehta adds that the team is not "overly optimistic" that Darnold will be healthy enough to play against the Patriots in Week 12 (the Jets have a show in Week 11).
Darnold comes from the worst game of his rookie season, a four-intercept during the loss of Sunday to the dolphins. He now has an NFL-high 14 intercept this season and threw seven in the last three games.
Veteran Josh McCown, who must appear in a game this season but was admirably the team starter in 2017, would start for New York if Darnold is indeed injured.
