The US manager had desperately tried to strengthen his defense during a summer transfer window that saw Premier League giants linked to characters like Toby Alderweireld, Jerome Boateng and Harry Maguire.
Mina emerged as a goal after her World Cup executions, but eventually moved to Everton on the day of the deadline, despite reporting that she had agreed personal conditions with United.
According to the Sunday Times, Mourinho even phoned the 23-year-old in an attempt to persuade the former star of Palmeiras to join him.
Everton also signed Andre Gomes from Barcelona on the day of the transfer (photo: Getty). According to the Times, however, the leaders of the United States have refused to approve an agreement after Barcelona had insisted on a repurchase clause.
It was also said that the United States was discouraged by the conduct of representatives of Mina during the negotiations, while also rejecting a proposal that included Portugal midfielder Andre Gomes, who had joined the Everton on the day of the deadline from Barcelona.
Speaking on Friday after United's failure to add Fred and Diego Dalot's purchases, Mourinho said: "It will be a difficult season for everyone, not just for us.
"I had my plans for many months and I find myself with the market closed in a situation where I did not think I was. It's the last time I talk about this. It's over, the market is closed.
"It's football management, I think football is changing and managers have to be called head coach."
