The acquisition of Obsidian Entertainment by Microsoft does not prevent the studio from developing for the competition, at least for The Outer Worlds. After spending some time with pre-existing IPs like Star Wars and Fallout, Obsidian switched to a completely new property that takes the developer's experience with role-playing games and combines it with their love for science fiction.
What is The Outer Worlds?
The Outer Worlds is certainly not Fallout: New Vegas 2, but it is clear that Fallout's influences have spread. From his system of dialogue to his choices and his humor, this pulpy science fiction game will feel as familiar as it is different. Being on a tight budget, there may also be a bit of jank to which players have become accustomed.
And the timing of the announcement could hardly be better for Obsidian. With Bethesda facing the weight of the player after Fallout 76 failed to meet expectations, people were asking Obsidian to return to Fallout and regain the former glory of the series. It did not happen, but what the study announced turned out to be the best thing.
From the creators of Fallout and Fallout: New Vegas
The name of Obsidian may not be associated with Fallout or Fallout 2, but many of its developers are alumni of Black Isle Studios and Interplay Productions, the two companies that created the franchise. In fact, one of the original Fallout directors – Tim Cain – is a co-director on The Outer Worlds. According to Cain, about 20% of The Outer Worlds staff also worked in Fallout: New Vegas for the company. A fraction of The Outer Worlds team also participated in the first two Fallout games.
A story that takes us to the limit of the galaxy
Set in the depths of our galaxy, The Outer Worlds puts players in the guise of a settler who wakes up long after they should and finds the edge of the galaxy already a colonized corporate infernal hole. Thank you, capitalism. The Outer Worlds universe is a corporate greed that sees most forms of discrimination fall on the roadside in favor of classism and employer rights. It does not matter who you are as long as you are flipping through another day of work to benefit your boss.
Your character is involved in a conspiracy that threatens to destroy the colony and all that his capitalist society has built there. The choices you make will influence the outcome of the events as the story progresses and the game will present more endings as such.
Do not expect a great adventure like you would do with Fallout, though. While Obsidian appreciates enthusiasm, it is better to temper expectations as its budget limits its scope. The Outer Worlds does not want to be an open sandbox that players can spend for hundreds and hundreds of hours. You can not just go and visit any place you see in the distance. The Outer Worlds is more content than this, but still gives a sense of freedom and players will be able to visit a couple of different planets.
Obsidian tends to compare the purpose of the game to Knights of the Old Republic 2, or perhaps even a little smaller. It is fair to estimate that players can get dozens of hours of play, especially if they play more than once. In an interview with Game Informer, co-directors Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky said that 15-40 hours is a reasonable frame of reference for the average player.
Paradise of role-playing games
All the good things you love from role-playing games will make their appearance in one way or another. Factions? You got it right. Character creator? Devil yes Up-to-date skills and abilities? Even that. Branching dialogue with a reputation system? Yes. The only thing that seems to be missing is the ability to romanticize your companions. Essentially, Obsidian wanted to focus more time and resources on the reactivity and replayability of the game and less on the bocciabilità of the characters.
The Outer Worlds caters to all sorts of game styles, whether you like to explode on everything you meet on your way or prefer the silent and stealthy approach. Developers are not entirely sure if the game can be beaten without killing anyone (although I hope so), but players can give it a try to see how far they can go without extracting blood. On the flip side, you can really kill everyone and still beat the game.
While taking place on an alien planet, The Outer Worlds will not have intelligent alien life forms like Mass Effect, even if there are alien creatures that are more like monstrous animals. For this reason, the character you create and the people you interact with will also be human. This still takes place in our galaxy, it does not take place in the same line as the real world.
Can you modify it?
A staple of role-playing games like this is the ability to edit them, and you should be able to do it somehow with The Outer Worlds. Although Obsidian says that at the time of launch there will be no support for mods, the developer will examine it after the game is sent to see what kind of support it may have. Modding has a large community that Obsidian wants to make sure it is not forgotten or overlooked.
Will there be microtransactions?
"Hell no", says co-director Boyarsky.
When can you play it?
Players can get their hands on The Outer Worlds in 2019, even though Obsidian Entertainment has not committed itself to a final release date. Although Obsidian is now owned by Microsoft, The Outer Worlds will still be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and PC.
The pre-orders are not yet in progress, but we will update this page once. The obsidian has revealed that the game will cost $ 60 retail.
