45 countries attend 5-day navy exercise in Pakistan

A five-day multinational exercise organized by the Pakistani Navy was launched in the vicinity of the southern port city of Karachi as part of efforts to improve cooperation in combating pirates, terrorists and smugglers.

Representatives of the navy of 45 countries, including the United States, Great Britain and Japan, participate in the exercise called "Aman" or peace, which began Friday in the North Arabian Sea.

The Pakistani Navy says that several countries, in addition to seafarers, have also sent ships to participate in the exercise.

Pakistan has been organizing the exercise since 2007 but has never invited arch-rival neighbor India.

Pakistan and India have a history of bitter relationships. They have fought two of their three wars over disputed the Himalayan region of Kashmir since their independence from British rule in 1947
