Militant shot in attack on Indonesian police

JAKARTA, Indonesia – The Indonesian police say that the attack of a suspected Islamic militant at a police station in Jakarta has been hampered by an officer who has shot the man in his hand.

The police spokesman for Jakarta, Argo Yuwono, says that the man with the knife and the machete repeatedly shouted "God is great" when he attacked officers early on Friday at the station in the north of Jakarta.

A policeman suffered slight injuries to his arm and another shot the attacker's hand and forced him to drop the machete.

The police are a frequent target of attacks by militants in Indonesia, who see them as the power of the secular government they want to replace with an Islamic state.
